How to Build a Game Server

Players who use their PC as a gaming platform are often taking their games online. Game developers offer servers for these players to use, but these dedicated servers have some downsides. Multiple players can create lag, some gamers will cheat during game play and often, playing online with random gamers can lead to frustration instead of entertainment. Creating your own game server alleviates these problems and is especially useful for clans of players all dedicated to online gaming.

Things You'll Need

  • PC Running Windows Operating System
  • Broadband Internet Connection
  • Game Software
  • Game Client Software

Instructions

  • 1
Purchase or use a spare PC that will be used solely as your game server. The PC does not need to have the latest video or sound cards but should have as much RAM as possible. 1GB of RAM is recommended; the more RAM the less chance of drops in performance.
  • 2
Choose a processor for your PC that is fast enough to accommodate multiple players. Use the chart below as a guide:
8 players or less requires a CPU speed of 933 MHz
9 to 16 players require a CPU speed of 1.6 GHz
17 to 32 players require a CPU speed of 2.4 GHz
Over 32 players require a CPU speed of 3.0 GHz
As in the case with choosing RAM, you can never have a too-fast CPU.

Check your Internet connection speed. Running a game server requires at least a broadband connection to allow eight or more players to game without lag or connection disruption. If you plan on using the game server for over 32 players, check with you Internet service provider to subscribe to their fastest connection.

Download and install the software necessary to run your game server. Most games offer free server software for download from the developer's website. Other games have server software built into the standard product. Check the manual for each game you plan to run on your server.
  • 5
Purchase and install the game client software. This software is an additional license for each player who plans to use the server. Without client software, users will be unable to connect to your server. These licenses can cost up to $40.
  • 6
Run the game server software you downloaded. The software will walk you through configuration of the server. You may be asked to download additional software such as anti-cheating software or support for voice chat. It is recommended you download these additions to maximize on your investment.
    • 7
Configure the server to your gaming needs. You will have the option to change time limits in game or set a cap on the maximum number of players. Take note of the server name and password provided at the time of configuration. Your players will need that information.
        • 8
Save the changes made in your server. Distribute the server name and password to your players. You server will now be accessible with game play.

        Tips & Warnings

        • Setting up a server for each game is different. Visit the game developer's website for instructions specific to each setup.
        • Exercise caution when giving out the name and password of your server. You are allowing access to your system, so trusting your players is important.
