How to Make a Dedicated Game Server

Online gaming has become an integral part of the current generation of PC gamers. New games allow players to access servers hosted by the developers to play with other gamers around the world. For those looking for a more intimate gaming experience, dedicated gaming servers can be created for a small group. This document will explain how to create a dedicated gaming server using a spare PC and software provided by game developers.

Things You'll Need

  • Windows-based PC High-speed Internet connection Game software

Instructions

  • 1
Choose a PC that will be used as your server. You can purchase a new computer or use an extra one. It is important that the PC has at least 1 gigabyte of RAM. More is better, but don't use any less.
    • 2
Determine how many players you wish to have in the game at once. For eight players or fewer, you need a CPU speed of 933 MHz. Nine to 16 players require a 1.6-GHz CPU, and 17 to 32 players require 2.4 GHz. For more than 32 players, choose a 3.0-GHz CPU.
Upgrade your processor as necessary, there is no danger in having a processor that is too fast
    • 3
Check the speed of your Internet connection. A dedicated game server requires at least broadband, but a T1 or higher connection is recommended. Slower connection speeds lead to lag and players being dropped from the game. Use a wired connection, not wireless, to prevent service interruptions.
      • 4
Obtain the software necessary to run your game server. Most games have free server software for download from the developer's website. Your game may have the software built in. Refer to the game manual for links to the developer's website.
        • 5
Set up the server software. You will be offered the option to download additional software to enhance the experience of your players. Use your discretion when downloading these add-ons.
          • 6
Choose a password for players to use when accessing your server. This is done through the game server software. Once chosen, distribute this password to your players and begin playing. If you choose to have an open server, any gamer can join without needing your permission.

          Tips & Warnings

          • Your PC must remain on for users to access it as a server. Invest in a cooling fan to prevent overheating.
