How to Host VoIP

VoIP, or Voice over Internet Protocol, applications, offer voice communication features over the Internet. Many VoIP applications work on a client/host model, meaning one user acts as the central point for the others, and everyone participating in a call connects to the host machine. The host often has direct control over who can enter the voice chat, and can manipulate the call settings as desired. The process of hosting a VoIP call depends on which software you use. TeamSpeak, Ventrilo and Skype are all freely available VOIP programs that have hosting features with simple setups.

Instructions

  1. TeamSpeak

    • 1
Download the newest version of the TeamSpeak server software from the TeamSpeak website. This program allows you to host a TeamSpeak session, but you must also download the TeamSpeak client software if you want to join the call.
    • 2
Unzip the downloaded server files using the operating system's built-in utility, or another unzipping program such as 7-Zip or Winzip. Open the folder.
    • 3
Run the file that begins with "t3server_." The file name will vary slightly based on your operating system. A TeamSpeak server icon will appear in the task bar. As long as this icon is active, you are hosting a TeamSpeak session.
    • 4
Connect to the TeamSpeak session by opening the TeamSpeak client software and entering "localhost" in the connection address. Other users will need the system's IP address to connect and begin voice communication.

    Ventrilo

    • 5
Download the server program executable file from the Ventrilo website, selecting the file that matches your operating system. Run the downloaded file to install the system. If you wish to participate in the Ventrilo conversation you host, you will also need the Ventrilo client software available on the same Web page.
    • 6
Start the server by running the "VentSrv" file in the program's installation directory, or by selecting "Ventrilo Server" from the Start menu or applications list. A monitoring window will appear. You will host the session as long as this window remains open, and it will display information about the current session.
    • 7
Join the conversation by starting the Ventrilo client software and connecting to the "localhost" IP address. For users connecting remotely, you need to distribute your IP address as a connection point.

    Skype

    • 8
Download the application from the Skype website. Unlike other VoIP programs, Skype only has one executable file that allows users to both host and receive calls.
    • 9
Create an account when prompted and sign in. Add contacts by pressing the "New" button and entering the user's Skype name or email address.
    • 10
Click on a contact, or select multiple contacts by clicking while holding the "Ctrl" key. Click the "Call" or "Call Group" button to start hosting a call with those contacts. While you have control over the call, Skype does not use a traditional hosting system, but rather a peer-to-peer connection, so other users may not connect directly to your system even though you initiated the call.
