Many reasons exist to make a video game server. Some people do so to get a better understanding of how a server works. Others do it because they no longer wish to contend with administrators that moderate their favorite multiplayer games. The only alternative to making a video game server is to rent a game server, which can prove to be expensive. While different games require slightly different processes for game server creation, an updated game server tool should be able to handle what is needed. The one aspect all servers have in common is the need for a static Internet protocol (IP) address.
Things You'll Need
Instructions
Static IP Address Creation
- 1
Access the IP address, default gateway domain name server (DNS) and subnet mask. Click on the computer's "Start" menu and select the "Run" option. In order to use the command prompt, type "cmd". When the command prompt is available, type "ipconfig/all". Write down the IP address, default gateway DNS and subnet mask.
- 2
Set the computer to static IP. Access the Control Panel by using the "Start" menu again. Select the "Network and Internet Connection" icon, and then select "Network Connections." Locate the Internet connection currently used, right-click and choose "Properties." Choose "Internet Protocol" and then "Properties." Check-mark the "Static IP Address" box. This will create a new window.
- 3
Input the IP address, default gateway DNS and subnet mask that you wrote down. The first three sets of numbers (192.168.1.) must be transcribed for the IP address . After that, the last three-digit number can be anything. Once completed, select "OK." Verify that the static IP address works properly via use of an Internet browser.
Game Server Creation
- 4
Create the game server using a game server update tool. The Half-Life Dedicated Server (HLDS) Update Tool is a good game server tool to use. A download link for this tool is in the Resources section. Download the tool and run its installation wizard. When prompted to enter a destination folder to use, browse the drives and files to select a destination. If you don't want a particular destination, use the default location labeled "Program Files."
- 5
Create a program location. Go to the "Start" menu, select the "Run" option and type "cmd" to access the command prompt. Input "cd" in the prompt, and then press "enter." Insert "cmd" again, add a space and enter the program location's full address. This is case-sensitive.
- 6
Implement the game server. Input the server tool command update, and add the name of the game for which the server is created. For example, if the game the server is created for is "Day of Defeat Source," type "hldsupdatetool.exe --command update -- game "Day of Defeat Source" --dir. Include all quotation marks, spacing and periods. The program will install after you enter the command and should be ready for use in about 1/2 hour to one hour.
