How to Make Your Own Game Server Free

Whether you want to make a private server for just you and your friends, or you're looking to start a large public server, the steps required for setup are the same. Though it does not cost anything to start a server of your own, having a second computer and a high-speed internet connection will prove highly beneficial. Setting up a server for the first time takes some practice and experimentation. It may take you several tries to get your server running the way you want it to.

Instructions

  • 1
Designate a computer as your server host. If you plan on playing on the server yourself, it is best to host the server on a separate computer from the one you will be playing on. Having too much going on with the computer running the server can result in a poor connection for everyone using it. Additionally, a fast, up-to-date computer will be a better host than a lower quality machine.

Download and install the dedicated server program for your game of choice. Most multiplayer games will have this software available for free on their official websites, or even as part of a package with the game software itself. If you are having difficulty locating the server software for your game, try searching fansites or gaming news sites. The installation steps for your software will vary heavily depending on the game you are playing.

Define your server's settings. Though each game will have its own specific commands, the main ways to access the server's setting is through a command-line interface. This allows you to input text commands to configure the server. You will need to find a list of the proper commands for your server. This may be included in the "Read Me" text file that came with your server software, or you may be able to find it on the website where you downloaded the software.
